You are invited to submit a paper for presentation at the pre-ICIS 2009 SIM Academic Workshop to be held from 9am-4pm on Tuesday, December 15th, 2008, at J.W. Marriott Desert Ridge Resort, Phoenix, Arizona. This year’s workshop will include invited and competitive paper presentations that focus on the theme: Enterprise and Industry Applications of Web 2.0.

The rise in popularity in the use of Web 2.0 tools in recent years is staggering.  Wikipedia was founded in 2001, yet now hosts over 10 million user-generated articles in 40 languages.   Facebook has only been open to the general public for three years, yet boasts 200 million users – over half of which use the service daily.   YouTube streams over 1 billion videos per day, meaning that every person in the world watches on average one video on YouTube each week.   The number of people using Twitter crossed the 14 million user mark in April of 2009, up from 1 million the year before.

Despite the widespread popularity of these tools at the consumer level, how these tools can be effectively managed by enterprises is still not well understood.  While managerial advice common across all technology adoptions--such as the need for user and management buy-in--may certainly apply, we take the perspective that Web 2.0 tools present fundamentally new management challenges.  For this pre-ICIS workshop we are seeking “research for practice” papers that address how business and IT leaders are choosing, implementing and using Web 2.0 tools within their enterprise setting and/or within particular industries.  We are interested in field research that reveals how the managerial challenges and implications associated with these new tools are being addressed, including cases that provide rich examples. The submissions reviewed most favourably will be those that focus on the unique capabilities and issues associated with Web 2.0 tools, rather than revisiting traditional management and information systems issues in a different setting.

For this workshop, we define Web 2.0 tools as:

  • Profile-based Web sites similar to the public sites of Facebook or LinkedIn;
  • Informal online meeting places such as virtual worlds and discussion forums;
  • Tools that analyze emails, instant messaging, and virtual space usage to identify social network and value-added networks;
  • Tagging tools to see how people categorize documents, events, and colleagues;
  • Mashup tools for combining and presenting information drawn from many sources;
  • Quick connection tools for information sharing, such as Twitter, instant messaging or presence awareness;
  • Virally distributed rich media (e.g. YouTube, podcasts);
  • Co-generation tools such as wikis or virtual worlds; and
  • Expertise location and sharing tools.

Themes to be addressed include but are not restricted to:

  • Strategies and challenges associated with employee and/or organizational adoption of Web 2.0 tools.
  • Business case metrics and benefits for leveraging web 2.0.
  • Ways of including suppliers and customers as well as employees.
  • Changes in worker collaboration and management practices needed in conjunction with Web 2.0 tools.
  • Creation of organizational policies for handling privacy, confidentiality, and proprietary information.
  • How employees are empowered to customize, create and mash-up data across tools and work processes.
  • Unique issues industries facing adoption in particular industries/ sectors (i.e. healthcare).

Workshop Deadlines:

  • Submit extended paper Abstract (3-5 pages, single spaced): Friday, October 2nd, 2009
  • Notification of workshop acceptance with preliminary editorial feedback: Wednesday, October 28th 2009

All submissions should be sent to the Program and Special Issue Co-Chairs:
